MIDNIGHT DINER

“ When is college starting?” has been the most frequently asked question lately. My daughter, who will be a freshman in her college in Massachusetts was supposed to start the first semester in September, and she would have been able to stay for the next semester as well to play on the softball team. She was supposed to move into the beautiful dorm on campus at the end of this month, but they just notified us that’s not going to happen because of the pandemic…

Despite everyone’s sympathy for my daughter, and even though she is disappointed about not being able to play softball on her team, she is in good spirits, thank God. My husband and I are of course happy to get to keep her at home for now. We’re grateful for our good health, for our family time together and to be able to enjoy the new world with masks, while it has been such a struggle for many people.

Though our daughter goes out to hang out with her friends more often, it wasn’t a long time ago when she said our dinner with TV is her favorite time of her day. We’ve watched many TV series on Netflix, and now we’re watching “Gray’s Anatomy” which has became like a soap opera now that we may stop watching soon. After our daughter goes upstairs to her room to facetime with her friends or to her zoom meeting with her college team, my husband and I also watch a Japanese show called “ Midnight Dinner” while we have a desert.

The show, my Korean-American friend recommended me to watch, is very funny, moving and authentic. The diner, simply named “Diner” is supposed to be in an alley in Kabuki-cho in the town of Shinjyuku in Tokyo, which is an area like Times Square in New York City. Busy, disgusting with neon lights on so many shops, restaurants, bars and porn business like the 42nd street area used to be. I never liked Shinjyuku.

The diner that opens at midnight and closes at seven in the morning is run by a man whom everyone refers as “master”. The small menu on the wall only says “Pork Miso Kenchin Soup Meal Set, Beer, Sake, Shochu, and states Alcohol Beverages limited to 3 bottles (3 glasses) per customer.”  but the master would make anything at request as long as he’s got the ingredient and knows how to make it. Soul food or a snack that would “hit the spot” as my mother-in law says. Each episode is titled by the name of a simple dish that goes with the story and they’ll give us a tip how to make it at the end of the show.

From the old stained wall, the old TV on the wall, to the couple of disposable umbrellas that look like some customers left behind… those “unnecessary but you’d find them almost always in a place like this” kind of props look so real, I was sure they shot the show at a diner that exist in real life. I was wrong. It was a set!! I couldn’t believe how real and good it is. In fact, it was so convincing, I read that some fans got worried and called-in to the show when there was a fire in the area!

Another amazing part of this show are the English subtitles. My American husband reads it while I just watch and listen to the Japanese dialogues, but we both laugh and react at the exact same time! Kudos to the translator!!! I know how hard it is to translate jokes and expressions because I used to work as a translator in another life. That’s why I can’t really translate my blog instead I write it in Japanese separately.

The sight of the busy Tokyo at night to the sad theme song and the simple common Japanese food as “Tofu over rice” etc. makes me homesick a little, but we really enjoy this show. It made my husband want to go get a Japanese beer which he can’t find in any shops around here, and when I made the “ Butter Rice with a dash of soy sauce” after we watched it, he loved it. He’s never been to Japan yet, hopefully this show will make him want to go soon… when the pandemic is finally over.

    Thanks for sharing your insights.

I have watched a few older films on Netflix which I think are worth recommending “ the children act” with Emma Thompson is a sophisticated psychological drama about love for humanity, worth watching.
