VOTE!

How is everyone doing on the last Sunday before election day..? I know pretty much everyone I know has voted or are helping people to vote. Facebook warriors are fighting tirelessly. The funniest friend of mine wrote “This Saturday night don’t forget to set your clocks back to 1945 so you can give Fred Trump a condom” as the daylight saving ended today. If he wasn’t born, or if he didn’t become the president, 200,000 people who died on covid 19 may have survived. As I scroll down my page, I accidentally found out one of my nicest friends was a Trump supporter. I’m sure she saw my post-presidential debate-drunk rant “It’s exhausting. At this point, if you’re voting for Trump, I’m not your friend, I’m not your family” post.  

I’ve got some likes… the only person who disliked it was my step mother-in law. My husband’s divorced parents and their spouses are Trump supporters who live in Florida. My husband’s younger brother and his Ecuadorian-American wife live there too. In 2016, I asked my husband to convince them not to vote for Trump, but he didn’t want to. The parents voted for Trump, and the brother and his wife didn’t vote at all. It was shocking to me, for I gave up my citizenship from my birth country to vote as an American citizen. 

My daughter who turned 18 this year, has been pretty passionate about the politics ever since the BLM protests she has joined, and was very happy to be able to vote against Trump. She bought a maroon pant suit with her own money she earned from her lifeguard job to be Kamala Harris for Halloween. When her nana called us a couple of months go, nana expressed her sympathy for her not to be able to study or play softball at her college she’s got into due to the pandemic. I couldn’t help but asked her not to vote for Trump so she could go to college sooner. After a pause, she said,“Let’s not talk about politics because it would ruin our relationship.” I stopped there, but I wanted to tell her that this is not about politics anymore, but it’s about all lives and the planet we share.  

My step-mother in law commented on FB that I should apologize because I know my father in law is a long time republican, and that I hurt him. I replied that I won’t apologize for expressing my feelings. I also wanted to say that he would hurt millions of people loosing their ACA if he votes for Trump again. My husband, who hasn’t spoken with his father since he called Hunter Biden “That Crooked..” took my side and said,“If he doesn’t want to loose his family, just vote for Biden. What is it so hard ?”  What would they loose, if Biden wins? They are retired and don’t have to pay income taxes anymore. They have medicare. Why can’t they follow those good republicans for Biden? 

The hardest thing to me right now is to understand Trump supporters’ mind. It scares me to see how they don’t care for other people, animals and for the planet. If Trump looses, would they go even more violent that could cause a civil war..? If he wins…how much more damage can he do? I knew that I can’t change anyone’s mind, including Trump supporters’. One of my friend told me that we’re not supposed to talk about politics on FB. Nobody likes to see negative posts, but how can I not to fight for people dying alone at the hospitals, healthcare heroes, the children at the detention center, for dying animals and the earth? Is it better to see what I cook or ate for dinner? Silly games to waste your time? 

I hope I won’t be posting about Trump or innocent people and animals being abused anymore. Instead, I’d be posting to brag about my daughter’s achievements at college, or photos of her playing in the college softball uniform, showing my costume designs at theaters, concerts I see and trips to abroad. That’s why we all need to do something to help. We are here in this world to help others. Shout out on FB to encourage friends and family in the four key states to vote. Donate to Biden if you can. アメリカは大統領選挙日を二日後に控えた日曜日。こちらに住む皆さんいかがお過ごしでしょうか‥知人たちはすでに期日前投票を済ませ、選挙のボランティア活動をしています。Facebookではもっぱら戦士たちの論争続き。日本でも同じなのでしょうか。アメリカの夏時間は今日で終了したのですが、「土曜の夜、時計を１９４５年に戻すのを忘れないように。フレッド・トランプ（共和党大統領トランプの父親）にコンドームを届けるんだ！」という、楽しい友達の投稿には笑えました！トランプが生まれていなかったなら、大統領になっていなかったなら、コロナで二千万人もの亡くなった方たちの命が救われたかもしれない。ページを見ていて偶然、良い友達の一人がトランプサポーターだと気づいた。「もううんざり！ここまで来てもトランプに投票するっていうなら、もう友達でも家族でもない。」という酔っ払って最後の大統領候補の討論会を観た後に書いた私の投稿、きっと彼女も読んだと思う。

まあまあ好評を得たけれど、義父の奥さんだけはそれが気に入らなかった。フロリダに住むオットの離婚した両親とその再婚相手はトランプサポーター。弟とそのエクアドル米国人の奥さんもフロリダに住む。フロリダは共和党と民主党の支持率が変動する州なので、４年前の選挙前に、トランプに投票しないように家族を説得してくれるようオットに頼んだけれど、嫌がられた。両親たちはトランプに投票して、弟夫婦は全く投票に行かなかった。アメリカ人になって投票するため、日本の国籍を放棄した私にとってはショックでした。

今年１８歳になったウチの娘はブラックライブスマターのデモに参加して以来政治に燃えていて、反トランプとして投票できたことをとても喜んでいます。ハロウィーンのコスチュームには民主党副大統領候補のカマラ・ハリスになるために、ライフガードの仕事で稼いだ自分のお金でマルーン色のパンツスーツを買ったくらい。二ヶ月ほど前に義母が電話してきた時のこと。コロナのせいでこの秋から始まった大学の授業を娘がキャンパスで受講できなくて、ソフトボールもできなくてかわいそうだと言うので、それなら早く大学に行けるように、どうかトランプに投票しないで欲しい、と思わず言ってしまった。一瞬の沈黙の後、「政治の話はナシにしましょう。家族の絆が壊れるから。」と義母。そこで辞めたけれど、もう政治の問題じゃなくて、命とみんなが住むこの惑星の問題なんだけど、と言いたかった。

義父が長年の共和党支持者と知っていながら「もう家族ではない」とFacebookに書いて傷つけたことを謝るべきだ、と継母はコメントした。自分の気持ちを表現したことに対して私は謝るつもりはない、と答えた。義父がトランプに投票することによって、何億人もの人たちが健康保険を失って傷つくんですよ、とも言ってやりたかった。義父がトランプがしたように民主党バイデン大統領候補の息子を「悪党」呼ばわりして以来口を聞いていないオットは、「家族から見放されたくないのなら、バイデンに投票すればいいんだ。難しいことなない。」と私の味方をしてくれた。バイデンが選ばれて、彼らにどんな損害があるのだろうか。引退していて所得税を払う必要もないし、保険もある。正統な共和党バイデンサポーターを見習ったらどうだろう？

私にはトランプサポーターの気持ちを理解することができない。他の人々や動物や地球の心配をしないでいることが恐ろしい。トランプが敗北した日には、今以上に暴力的になって、内戦になるのではないだろうか。トランプが再任することになった日には、これ以上どれだけの損害を起こすのだろうか。私にはトランプサポーターの気持ちも誰の気持ちも変えることはできない。友達の一人はFacebookで政治のことを投稿するべきではないと言った。誰だってネガティブな投稿は見たくないけれど、病院で孤独に死んでいく人々や、その世話をしているヘルスケアのヒーローたち、国境で親から離されて投獄されている難民の子供たちや、かわいそうな動物や滅びる地球をどうして放って置けるのだろうか。作った食事や今夜食べた物の写真を見る方がいいのだろうか？つまらないクイズをして時間を無駄にする方がいいのだろうか？

私だってできることなら、トランプのことも、無垢な人々や動物たちの虐待も投稿したくはない。その代わりに大学で活躍する娘を自慢したり、ソフトボールチームのユニフォームを着た娘の写真、シアターのコスチュームの仕事の写真、コンサートに行った写真、海外旅行の写真を載せたい。だからこそ、みんなで助け合うべきだと思うのです。私たちみんな、助け合うために存在するのだから。Facebookでバトル州に住む友達や家族が投票するように大声を上げて欲しい。できることなら、バイデンのキャンペーンに募金して欲しい。残り二日！
