Coincidence /偶然

On the first Saturday of the new year, my band Cherry Bombs made our NYC debut at the iconic venue where Radiohead, Chris Martin or Lady Gaga performed- the Mercury Lounge. I couldn’t believe we’ve come this far… 

Our drummer, Elise Trucks-daughter of the legendary drummer, Butch Trucks (of the Allman Brothers Band) who I’d always played together with in a few different bands in Battle of the Fantasy Girl Bands, asked me to form a “real” band with her after the last battle we competed in 2022. She introduced me to the powerful soprano singer, Andrea Chesley, to be the lead singer. I said, “sure”. 

We invited Dianne Le Verrier who had sang and played guitar with us. Elise initially wanted us to play or even write funk music which I’d never listen to, I said that it’s not for me. The only music I wanted to play was 80’s New Wave music. Elise said that’s fine with her, and even though Dianne wanted to be the only front woman, she agreed to join for the love of 80’s music. I love the hand-capping-like percussion sounds that make the distinctive 80’s sound, and we invited Hailey London who has a great sense of rhythm as a backup vocalist to play some percussions. The last to joined us was Nika Nesgoda on cello our beautiful ambassador. Without her and her family’s generosity to use their beautiful music room in Amagansett, and the apartment in NYC, we wouldn’t have survived. Dianne and her family were also generous for us to use their basement that we called “Bomb shelter”. 

Our first two gigs were for fundraisers then got invited to play at THE Stephen Talkhouse where so many famous artists have played. I used to get bad stomach pains from the stage fright but   everyone else loved performing and people seemed to love our concept and the looks. But we all have day jobs, and it’s been very hard to get all of us together to rehearse. We were a group of 6 multi-generational and now, multi-racial women band. As it happens to all bands, we had conflicts and many tear-involved dramas, and some member changes over the year. We’ve got helps from professionals as the multi-talented music educator Tye Granger on saxophone, the best guitarist in town, Bosco who is a family friend of Elise, the kindest drummer, Mike Guglielmo, and the maestro Bobby Peterson on synths. Now we have my friend and the talented writer, also multi-musician, Christopher Walsh on guitar.  

Since the young but very professional singers with theater backgrounds, Lola Lama and Vanessa Lynah joined us on lead vocals, we’ve had a young audience who would come out to late bars. The girls wore my designed dresses and looked so sexy! As Blondie said in her memoir book I’m reading now, “sex sells”. We’ve also got a hot and great synth player Mary Goebel. Band’s success is not always about the musicality but the looks is a big aspect. This band’s style is very important to me as I’m selling my designed clothing and the band’s merchandise too. With the half of the members living in the city, it’s even harder to get everyone to rehearse, but after playing with them, I finally felt ready to play in the city. 

Luckily, we got two friends: Randy Henner, a concert promotor and Nick Kraus of the Stephen Talkhouse, to introduce us to the Mercury Lounge. But unlike the Talkhouse, we were told that we can’t expect regulars or walk-ins and had to bring an audience. We were told that if we only sell 50 and under, we won’t get to play there again, so everyone promoted to sell tickets online. However, most friends who were going to come seemed to plan to pay at the door. From my experience, “ trying to come” is a polite way to say “No”, so I didn’t count on them.

We only got to have one run through the night before the gig at the Mercury Lounge. Chris, Elise and I got hotel rooms and the parking cost a lot to play in the city. I was also working for a musical with the costumes and I was beyond exhausted. But when I was driving into the city in my red Cherry Bombs mobil packed with our instruments, my heart was filled with love and gratitude to everyone involved in this band’s journey. I so enjoyed hanging out with my bandmates in the city. 

But, to make our fear worse, it started to snow Saturday morning. As our friend and legendary concert promotor Ron Delsener said in his documentary film, the weather affect ticket sales. As the day went on, many friends texted and let me know their cancelations. Thankfully, the young crowed didn’t care about the snow and we sold and packed the venue. They loved the 80’s music, and we had a great time playing for them. 

A few of my friends congratulated me for “making my dream come true to be a rocker” and I said that I never dreamed of becoming a rocker… wait, have I? Didn’t I form bands and performed on every given opportunities ever since elementary school? I did formed the Cherry Ice Cream and played the Go-Go’s song etc. at high school too and here I am in the band being called “Bass Boss”. As Blondie quoted in her book, “Coincidence is the stuff that’s meant to be”, I don’t believe in coincidence. I guess my bandmates or I’ve manifested? I’m not sure how long I get to play, but I’ll enjoy while it last.  We’ve just booked another gig at the Cutting Room in the city in May.   

年明け最初の土曜日、私のバンドがマンハッタンデビューした。それも、レディオヘッド、クリス・マーティンや、レディーガガもその昔演奏したと言う、かの有名なライブハウス、マーキュリーラウンジで。ここまで来れたのが信じられない‥

バトル・オブ・ファンタジー・ガールズバンドというイベントでいつも一緒にバンドを組んで参加していた、伝説的なドラマーの故ブッチ・トラックス（オールマン・ブラザーズ・バンド）の娘で、バンドのドラマーのエリース・トラックスから、２０２２年の私たち最後のバトルの後に、”マジ”でバンドを一緒にしないかと誘われた。パワフルなソプラノシンガーのアンドレア・チェスリーをレードボーカリストにと紹介されて、「いいよ」と返事した。

一緒に歌ってギタリストだったダイアン・レ・ヴェアーも誘った。エリースは最初、ファンクを演奏して作曲もしたいなんて言ったけれど、私には馴染みがないジャンルだし、作曲するなんて無理と断った。私がベースで弾きたかのは８０年代のニューウェイブだけだった。エリースはそれでもいいと言って、ダイアンも最初は彼女一人で歌いたいと頑張ったけれど、８０年代の曲が好きだからと参加することにした。私は８０年代の特徴的な、手拍子のようなパーカッションの音が好きなので、リズム感のあるヘイリー・ロンドンをパーカションとコーラスに迎えた。最後にチェロで参加したのはバンドのアンバサダーの役割も果たす、魅力的なニカ・ネスゴダ。素敵なミュージックルームのあるハンプトンズの家とマンハッタンのマンションでリハーサルをさせてくれている寛大な彼女のご家族がいなかったら、ここまでやって来れなかったと思う。ダイアンのご家族も、私たちがふざけて”ボムシェルター”と名付けたベースメントで練習させてくれた。

慈善パーティーの演奏から初めて、偉大なアーティストたちが演奏したライブハウスで有名なスティーヴン・トークハウスから招待されるようになった。私はステージ恐怖症でひどく胃が痛くなったけれど、他のメンバーは喜んで演奏して、観客も私たちのコンセプトとルックスが気に入っているようだった。ただ、六人がそれぞれ仕事を持つ、年代の違う、特に今では人種の違う女性が集まったグループなだけに、バンドにありがちな対立や、泣きの入る言い争いが起こって、メンバーの入れ替わりもあった。マルチプレイヤーで音楽を教えるタイ・グレインジャーがサックスで参加して以来、この街一番のギタリストで、エリース家族包みの友達のボスコ、親切なドラマーのマイク・ググリエルモと、地元の教会で指揮者を務めるボビー・ピーターソンがシンセサイザーで参加するなど、プロのミュージシャンも参加して応援してくれている。友達で才能あるライターでマルチプレイヤーでもあるクリストファー・ウェルズが現在のギタリスト。

若いけれどもすごくプロフェッショナルで、シアター出身のロラ・ラマとヴァネッサ・ライナがリードヴォーカリストとして参加するようになって以来、深夜のバーに繰り出す若者がオーディエンスに増えた。私がデザインしたステージ衣装を着てすごくセクシーな彼女たち！今読んでいる、ブロンディーの自伝でデボラ・ハリーが言うように、セックスアピールはウケる。シンセサイザーにホットなメリー・ゴーベルも参加した。バンドの成功は必ずしもその音楽性に限らず、ルックスも大事な要素。私はデザインした服とバンドの商品も売っているから、バンドのスタイルを重視している。メンバーの半分がマンハッタン周辺に住んでいるから、全員揃って練習するのがより大変になったけれど、このメンバーで演奏してみて、初めてマンハッタンデビューする自信が出た。

幸運にも、メンバーの友達で、コンサートプロモーターのランディー・ヘナーと、トークハウスのニック・クラウス二人からマーキュリー・ラウンジに紹介すると言ってもらえた。ただ、トークハウスと違い、常連や飛び込み客を期待できないから、観客を連れてくる必要があると言われた。チケットが５０枚以下しか売れなかったら、２度と誘われないと言われたので、みんなで頑張ってネット販売の宣伝に励んだ。にもかかわらず、観に来ると言った友達の殆どが当日券を買うつもりだった。ちなみに、「行くようにするね」と言うのは丁寧なお断りだと経験上知っているので、そう言った友達には期待できない。

メンバー全員揃って通しでリハーサルできたのは、マーキュリー・ラウンジの前夜一度だけであった。クリス、エリースと私はホテルを取らないといけなかったし、マンハッタンで演奏するには駐車代がひどくかかった。マンハッタンで他にもミュージカルのコスチュームの仕事を同時にしていたので、留めなく疲れ果てていた私。それでも、楽器を一杯に詰めこんだ愛車の赤いチェリーボム号でマンハッタン目指してドライブしていたら、今までこのバンドのジャーニーに関わってきたみんなに感謝の気持ちで胸が一杯になった。メンバーたちとマンハッタンに繰り出すのは本当に楽しかった。

だがしかし、その土曜日を迎えると、不安を煽るように、朝から雪が降り出した。知り合いで、ビートルズなどを招待して有名なコンサートプロモーターのロン・デルスナー氏が彼のドキュメンタリーフィルムで言うように、悪天候はチケットのセールスに影響を及ぼす。日が進むにつれて、友達からキャンセルのメッセージが入った。幸い、若者たちは雪のことなどは気にならず、チケットも売れて会場は一杯になった。演奏した８０年代の曲に乗ってくれて、私たちも楽しかった。

何人かの友達から、「ロッカーになる夢が叶ってよかったね！」と言われて、「ロッカーになることなんか夢みてなかったよ…」と言ったけれど、いやっ、そういえば、小学校の時から事あるごとにみんなを集めてフィンガー５の曲を歌ったよね。高校でもチェリーアイスクリームとしてゴーゴーズなんかの曲を演奏して、今「ベースボス」とか皮肉って呼ばれてバンドをやってる。「偶然っていうのは、起こるべき事が起こっただけなのよ」と、ブロンディーが本の中で言うように、私も偶然は信じない。メンバーか、私が引き寄せた現実なのかもしれない。いつまで続くか分からないけれど、それまで楽しもう。5月にマンハッタンのカッティング・ルームにライブの予定を入れた。
